word cannot save file because already open elsewhere

Students are trying to save a file with word on a mac.

They are getting the above message when trying to save this in their home folders.

The only way we can get round this is to save as a different file name then we end up with several files on the network

Take a look at the .TemporaryItems folder at the root of the share, its possible that people do not have the right to wright into this folder, do you also get problems where you cannot save in other programs ?

Hi These files are stored in the Students home area on a windows 2003 server.

They have read and right access to the folder.

They are able to save if they use a pc but not on the mac.

If for example the share is students$ located at C:\students and C:\students\year2004\bob was the users home folder to which he has access, then bob would also need read wright access to C:\.TemporaryItems in order for him to be able to save correctly.

 

What happens is word saves the temporary file in C:\.TemporaryItems before saving it to the final location in there home folder, if the user doesn't have the appropriate right then the save fails.

Have now gone and given the user read write and modify access to there home folder.

On the apple mac I have gone into the word preferenes and user options and the start up options to be the users H:drive.

 

This is still giving me the same error message.

My post relates to the .TemporaryItems folder found at the root of the share rather than the individual users home folder.

There are two things you need to check: The Unix ID of the user, and if you're using a Windows server, the Account that owns the root of the file system share.

 

Each user needs an individual unix ID, otherwise the server thinks the same computer has the file open multiple times. The share must be owned by auser other than the workstation user, otherwise the file never gets released.

MAybe a stupid question, but are there more than one user logged in?

 

I ask this because I've seen similar issue with other applications when I had "Fast User Switching" enabled. Students were selecting their name and selecting "Login Window" thinking this logged them out. In one day I had 15+ users logged into one computer. Found this because I was getting HelpDesk tickets that were saying certain applications were open because it was open already.

 

Just throwing it out there.... may be the temp file issue discussed above.

 


