Simcfc73 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Has anyone had any luck getting a OEM license number from M$? I ask this because I am fixing a kids laptop by replacing the hard drive but the sticker underneath with the license on it is worn and I can't make out 5 of the digits... or the version of vista it should be. Just asking before I phone India
pete Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Given that it's possible to convince them to give you licences for £15K worth of software without any checking* that you're entitled, I can't see how you'd fail. (We'd bought the software, but were quite miffed by the lack of proper checking that we had). *their system was down, but even on smaller purchases, they never check properly.
pwds Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Never done this- have you any proof of purchase? Might be easiest going through the store although you may be out of luck there if it's out of warranty.
theriver Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 As it's OEM, they may well send you back to the machine vendor. I spent a very frustrating half hour with them on the phone this morning, laptop on one hand, OEM disk in the other, and the best they could come up with was to send me to talk to Dell.
Simcfc73 Posted January 20, 2010 Author Posted January 20, 2010 Ended up sticking Vista on and telling him he had 30 days to sort it. Was going to let him have the windows 7 DVD with the 6 months license but decided just to leave it.
lordasb Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 could the kid not get educational version discount on a new code? also did the laptop not come with restore disks ? or i take it they didnt make them... that is allways a classic one i get many times over..
