E-portal on a separate server?

How do i create an e-portal web server on a separate server talking to the facility data server on a different machine?

Just install eportal on the new server and point back to the old one for the data from the Facility Controller - as far as I remember

Hi,

Controller is used to communicate with the data server... The data server contains the settings in which ePortal uses.

 

If you want ePortal to load on one server but the data server to be on another you need to edit the server.xml in the ePortal\conf folder so it connects to the data server.

Change the address from localhost to the IP address of the server with the data server on.

You have to edit the workers.properties file in the \conf\

 

If you have access to the eportal installation files then go to the docs folder and open up :

 

Setting_up_ePortal_on_a_Single_Server.htm

 

It contains all the instructions and links to getting IIS set up correctly

This will work by allowing IIS to redirect the jave script to the server hosting Tomcat (IIS can't process Java - hence the ISAPI redirect DLL). If you configure your IIS server in this way traffic will hit the IIS server but then be directed to the ePortal server with TomCat (not really load balancing). Tomcat will process the page and send it back to the IIS server.

 

In that setup you wouldn't be using TomCat or the data serve on the box with IIS, but the pages would still load so it depends how you want the boxes configured and for what reasons.

We have the admin server with Controller & Dataserver installed.

Dataserver & ePortal installed on the server to run ePortal (requires both due to dependencies, even though dataserver does nothing)

 

IIS setup on the server with ePortal and then as mentioned before, change the settings.xml to point to the admin server.

 

Works quite nicely..... well as nice as ePortal can be.

Glad you've said that - I thought I must have imagined that ours had been running like that for the last 5 years!

If you want to run Tomcat on one server and have the dataserver on another server you can just install the tomcat service. This will give you a dependency error when starting but this can be removed from the Registry

 

Click on Start | Run and type in regedit

 

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FacilityTomcat

 

Find the DependOnService key, it should say it is dependant on Facility Data Server. Delete this key.

 

Reboot the server.

 

This will then allow the server to just have the ePortal services running which you can connect to the dataserver on another server.

 

Of course having both Dataserver and ePortal will work too and connect ePortal to another machine.
