We're currently using XP home for a few netbooks. I've used Steadystate to lock them down and this works ok but it suffers from a long pause when the service starts which is annoying. I've been unable to solve this issue so am looking to alternatives for a new batch of netbooks.

Anyone here using XP home and spent time locking it down? I can see a few sites out there listing loads of reg hacks but I’m wondering if a mandatory profile might be a better way to go?

Opinions?

Cheers.

Are you using these in a school? I didn't think you could use home for that.

Have a look at services that run, my xp pro sp3 computer would lag like 5+ minutes on startup and its fine now that i've disabled the following services:

* Wireless Zero Config

* UPS

* Security Center

* Auto Updates

They aren't on the domain. It's specifically the Steadystate service that hangs, it shows in the event log.

I came across similar problems, but my answer was a lucky find of several extra xp pro licences during the summer - I really don't see why I can't buy the bloomin things with XP Pro!

I could upgrade to pro under schools agreement but if I can just remove a few things XP Home is ideal as they don't need to be on the domain.
