Laptop Cannot Display HTTPS Sites

I've just set up a new laptop for one of our staff; she says that on her network at home (wireless using the standard Sky router), she can only access http, not https - all her other PCs and Macs at home are fine. I've connected it to the network in school, both wired and wireless, and it worked without issue. She's reasonably savvy, so I'm willing to believe her when she says there's a problem, but I can't replicate it.

 

Any suggestions as to what I should be looking for?

 

To further diagnostics, I may well take her laptop home and see what it does on my router (also Sky, conveniently) or try my laptop on her home network.

No is there a proxy at school that you are applying settings for and then only removing the http proxy setting at home leaving the https proxy set.

is it the security settings on IE? or are you using policy central? i had a problem at my last school where pc would randomly block machines accessing the internet (or at least thats what we thort it was, but as soon as we removed it it worked fine)

My Computer - Tools - Folder options - enable offline files.

 

Then (I'm assuming the laptop is setup on the domain) goto the mapped network drive for her work area (this is whilst the laptop is logged on to the domain) and right click on the My Settings folder and make available offline.

 

I've had to do this on our network because https sites write to your My Settings folder and because the laptops are part of a domain their profiles and my docs are on the server so when they taker them home it can't get to the My Settings so it doesn't work.

Try resetting IE to defaults and install FF to see if you have the same issue. I have seen some security/AV software incorrectly configured which can block secure traffic.

Don't think so. The proxy settings are restricted from the users, but a little third-party app is en/disabling them basically by selecting/deselecting the "use a proxy" tick box in the LAN settings tab.

We had this issue about two years ago, in the end i reset the GPO's back to default on the laptop.

 

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

 

then gpupdate

 

Fixed the issue for me.

I have once seen this behavior with HTTPS sites when a user installed some software from a major ISP who will remain nameless on her home laptop.

 

Resetting IE to defaults immediately resolved the problem.

 

That said the behavior manifested itself both in school and at home (she brought it to us when she was having problems with logon to Windows Live mail and we were able to replicate in school).

 

This does sound rather like offline files.

This can also happen if the user's profile has got slightly mangled. Try getting them to log on as a different user - if that user can access https sites then I'd definitely look at clearing out and giving them a new profile.
