Update Ruckus AP firmware

We're having an issue with one of our Ruckus access points and Netcontrol suggest updating the firmware. No problem so far but I can't find anywhere to enter a proxy address so it can't connect to the Ruckus update servers.

Someone at Netcontrol keeps telling me that I need to allow the AP to see the update servers but seems to have no concept of a proxy server especially one that is hosted at the LEA 20 miles away.

 

Their replies so far include "Change your firewall rules so the AP can see out" and " Move the AP temporarily to the other side of your firewall". I keep replying that we're part of a WAN and the proxy is miles away and that all of our other equipment that can see the internet by simply pointing it to the proxy server but the replies seem to become more ridiculous.

 

Can anyone help is there a way to set a proxy?

I discovered this, actually. Way around it is to download the firmware directly from the Ruckus website I beleive. Suprised NetCtrl haven't suggested this?

You are unable to enter proxy details. I suggested moving the AP to another connection, with no proxy server to do the update from the fwupdate servers. Perhaps taking the AP home for an hour or so.

 

Again, as specified in the email, this will be allot quicker / easier than grabing the update files and jumping from V 3 - 6 - 6 -7.1 - 8

I'm receiving the info from Net-Ctl second hand but taking it home is not really a solution as we might end up with 30 units and we don't have a connection that doesn't go through the proxy.

These update files are for ZoneDirectors and APs being managed by ZoneDirectors, not standalone APs.

Ok so we don't have a secondary link that doesn't go through a proxy. Taking it home isn't an option as I said we'll soon have quite a few so this won't be pactical.

 

So where can I download the update in the meantime to feed to the AP?

If you are going to have a multiple Access Points i strongly recommend getting a ZoneDirector to manage the APs. not only does it make the update process of the APs effortless you gain allot of features such as Mesh and roaming.

We don't have a ZD only a single AP that's the problem. Stuart is going to try to get the firmware for me and i'll put it on our tftp server.

So getting a ZD wouldn't help the OP anyway? They will still have to download from Ruckus site.

Sysman, you can update it when behind the proxy, it just depends on the proxy settings. We are behind the e2bn proxy here aswell as our ISA proxy, and it updates just fine, but depending on the LEA the proxy may not allow access.

No, to update the Ruckus APs you would update the firmware on the ZoneDirector, (Central management). The ZD will then push the firmware out to the APs.

 

If you are running APs in a standalone environment, very rare and not recommended if you are using multiple APs then the AP updates in different ways, either web, hence the need for proxy authentication if required or TFTP.

no you cant set a proxy in the Zone Director, atleast not to my knowledge.

No you can't, that's what I asked earlier, and the update doesn't work on the EMBC network.
