We're on 7!

Last week we upgraded to 7, some issues to iron out first.

 

We had a few probs with connecting printers,

 

All seems okay!

 

We couldn't upgrade from XP Pro to 7 Pro, had to do a custom install but don't think we'll be rolling out out across the school til next academic year!

We did the same after summer. Only problems we had really were printers also! Damn things.

We took a flyer and rolled W7 out across the whole school last August. It's been fine apart from a couple of minor and easily resolved issues.

What were the problems with printers?

 

UAC prompt unless you connect to a point and print source with signed drivers (2008 R2 as the print server will fix most of this, just need to add x86 drivers from a 7 machine to the R2 server)

Ah we use server 2003, probs will work better with server 2008,

 

but the network manager isnt planning the roll-out to the next academic year

 

It's just the I.T. Team with windows 7 here atm

I've got Win7 in my office too, joined to the 2003/RM CC3 domain (did the same with Vista too). Can easily justify it for testing and familiarisation purposes. No plans to roll it out across the school yet, as I can't really think of much reason to do that (not the justifies the expense, anyway).

 

Only problem I've found is it hangs if I log in immediately after booting the PC.

Same here, IT Office running 7 but it won't land on our teaching machines for a while until ECDL and the like catch up with training resources. I'll probably go down the same route as we did with Office 2007... roll out to admin machines first then go onto the teaching side once staff are comfortable with it.

 

One annoyance in 7 (not sure if GPO sorts it) is the irritating "Library" feature. What's the point of it if it doesn't support network drives? Tbh it seems a bit of a gimmick?

 

Only other thing that's annoying is that it seems to take much longer to read the folders in an Open \ Save window than XP did, is this still the network stack not quite cutting the mustard or something else?

 

Still waiting for our next batch of servers \ virtualisation before we go to 2008... all kinda ties up in a rather neat package doesn't it
