I have been using RIS more this term and all is going well. I have always added the pc fresh and never done anything where by creating PC names before hand.

I went to a pc today and it was corrupt so i started to re image it, with the same name etc. But it would not let me add it. It said i did not have privilege to change the name it already was registered with in AD.

I was giving it the same name, and also using the domain administrator user account to do it.

IS this right.? I though you could even prestage names but if i can even add the same pc back in with the same name due to a re image, surely it will have the same ris id?

Can some one please explain to a novice.

You can just reris the machine normally. I get that message whent he machine has been added normally and doesnt have an associated GUID either through prestaging or using the custom options when you first RIS the machine.

Half asleep here....

Had the same thing here...

I had installed xp using UA CD & sysprep etc i.e. ways that dont use RIS, but when deploying a RIS image [using Custom Method] to that machine for the first time and giving it the same machine name as one in the AD, I got the error message.

Being scared, I deleted that computer object from AD and tried again - using Custom Method so I can choose the Computer Name - and it worked fine.

Once done of course, you'll theoretically never have to use Custom [to enter the computer name] again hehe
