Laptop that connects to internet but not network

Its the heads laptop, ive had it all week. Ive been too busy to play with it over the last couple of days so have kinda forgotten what ive done.

 

It connects quite happily to the internet but it will not let me connect to anything on our domain, the domain doesnt show when its connected to the network either via wireless or wired.

 

I've done virus and spyware scans and it doesnt pick anything up.

 

I've done all the obvious but feel free to list things for me to try.

service pack 3 and windows firewall is disabled and you have reset the tcp/ip stack and reset winsock ?

I know this is kind of obvious, but it's always best to check:

 

Make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks is installed and active, plus File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is also installed and active.

 

Can you add the machine to the domain?

Have you tried uninstalling and then installing the latest driver for the NIC? Daft i know but it worked for me

In that case Un install and re install Nic using latest driver as per above

Then reset tcp/ip stack and winsock

Then add relevant services ie microsoft client etc to the NIC properties

 

Then try again

Change from domain to workgroup. Don't bother re-booting. Then change back to the domain, re-booting this time.

Sounds indeed like the laptop is not part of the domain.

Hi.

 

For you to get Internet Access are you connected wireless or wired.

 

Also to get Internet Access have you put in proxy detials? if you have you must be connected to a network. Have you tried to ping any of your network shares or DC to see if you can actually ping them.

 

Be good starting point.

Have you checked that there isn't some sort of ACL or Firewall rule somewhere that is blocking the IP address of the laptop from accessing the NEtwork but allowing Internet ? Try maybe statically assigning a different IP and I'd also reset the TCP/IP Stack on the laptop and restart the switch to which it is connected. Perhaps try pinging / tracerouting to other network devices IE Switch / Router and run wireshark on the laptop see if it sheds any light to what is going on, update NIC drivers and also Check that all the networking services are running in Services.msc - a service may have become disabled and may need restarting.

The laptop hasn't had a home version of Norton Internet Security installed has it?

 

I've had exactly that problem before - internet connection fine, but Norton is set by default to block all other network traffic.

 

A pain, but easy to solve once you figure out that's the problem!
