Server 2008 x64 printer management problems

I have just installed Windows Server 2008 standard 64bit and the printer management snap-in so that I can re-do the way printers are installed/deployed through the network.

 

One of the methods I'm going to use to install printers is:

 

> On the client workstation, install the printer through a web browser by going to

http://(server name)/printers then selecting the required pritner and clicking connect

 

Half way through, I get a message saying :

 

"Printer Installation Failed"

 

"The driver files are not available for the current CPU platform. Please contact your administrator to install proper driver files on the server"

 

The client workstation is Windows XP SP3 Professional

 

Has anyone got any ideas on what this could be?

I assume you have installed the x86 drivers on the server as additional drivers in printer options?

I have tried this and it says

 

"The selected driver must be installed from a x86 computer using type 3 (user mode) drivers"

 

When I try this on a x86 workstation, I get "Unable to install Brother HL5350DN BR-Script3 - usermode, x86 driver, The operation is not supported"

 

Is it just down to the server being x64 and the clients being x86?

try installing it from a x86 windows vista machine as it will have the required printing components to put on the 2008 server.

I was doing it through a windows vista x86 workstation as I have the admin pack for it.

why not just a GPO to give it out to them, i did it this after noon in a couple of minutes

I tried this also but the client workstation either crashes when trying to print or it asks to locate the privers as if your installing a new USB printer.

 

Am resorting back to Server 03 x86 now anyway to save the hassle

We have 4 Windows 2008 R2 servers wich provides drivers for our XP clients. So the combination of 64-bits server and 32 bits clients is not an issue. As long as you provide the 32 bit driver into the server installation.

 

Watch out for different versions of the driver, if you installed driver version 1.0 on the 64 bits server. The client (32 bits) must also be driver version 1.0

 

When these are different, conflicts can occur.
