Hey I have just bought a new psu for a dell computer it is set at 115 by the switch on the back... is this right or does it need to be at the 230?

230, will go bang on 110. Why they send them out set at that voltage I don't know!

should be 230 - just double check it's designed for UK and the model number matches the one you are replacing

 

You will smell if you have the wrong voltage set

put some glue in the switch to stop them being flicked in furture

most new dell PSU's don't come with the switch anymore.

Yes if the little cherebs set it to 110 then turned it on it would kill it.

 

Why can't they just all autorange on the voltage I do not know.

Ok so i fiitted the new psu and set it to 230...got all excited pressed the power and... nothing happens... how can I tell what is wrong? Could it have wrecked the motherboard?

very possible that it's blown the mobo, CPU, RAm

We've all done that before, either switched on at the PSU but not the mains or the other way round.

I spoke to dell regarding putting glue on the power supplies to stop this happening.. They said that if i was to do this then bang goes the warranty, so now if someone flicks the switch they pay for a new PSU.

how odd... we unfortunately have some fujitsu machines with silly PSU's (wrong size thing) and they won't replace under the warrenty if the switch is flicked so we've filled them with glue - the other thing to do is if there are metal tags over the switch they can sometimes be bent to stop movement
