Wireless network - Secure/Unsecure

Recommended Posts

Posted

Just had a call about this, bit of an odd one.

When the laptop is connected to an unsecure network pages display fine in the web browser. However, when connected to a secure network, pages cannot be displayed. The network connection is not an issue I am assuming as the status does say connected.

Ethernet connection to the router works fine.

This has happened on two networks in two different locations.

Any ideas?

It's a bit mixed really, but I've seen machines trying to connect forever (obtaining an IP address), or machines failing to see the network completely (due to its security) which is more common.

Another thing to check is what channel wireless is broadcasting on. 1, 6 or 11 are recommended. I would avoid 13.

On that note if you have a WAP that can use the 5ghz channel it may be worth while seeing if you can set it to the normal frequency and not 5ghz as not all wifi cards can use the 5ghz range - long shot but just a thought but agree on the channel side
