Toshiba Satellite BSOD

I've got a teacher's laptop that powers up, displays the windows XP logo and then goes to blue screen. Initially, the mouse and cap lock were working but now the mouse is frozen. I've tried safe mode and last known good operation and that blue screens.

 

I'm resigned to telling the teacher that she is going to lose all her data and the look of disbelief that this could happen to her.

 

Is there anything else I can try before mucking about trying to extract her valuable and unbacked up work?

Sata operation in bios perhaps?

Remove hdd and plug it in as a slave on a desktop machine or use a usb caddy & take a backup.

Yup, I resigned to having to do just that but I'll give her a fright first. That might encourage them to back stuff up!
