Wireless PC not accessing shares

I must be missing something obvious here, but my brains not in it at the mo cus i'd rather be on my sofa!

 

Anyhoo, we have 3 pc's in the library that are wireless.

 

They see and connect to the wireless ap's ok, i can get on the internet ok but i can access any shares and its as if the domain dont exist. I can remote to the Server, i can ping the server (but the server cant ping me....) Wired is obviously fine but thats only cus ive draped a long wire across the room.

I would check if the windows firewall is off or if you maybe have a firewall on your AP

ive checked the firewall on the pc so i know thats off.....

 

I doubt it makes a difference but i've just imaged these machines....

 

interesting point about the AP...i recently fiddled with it so im wondering if i've left a firewall on that...

ok, i've had a look at the router settings and cant find anything to do with firewalls...any type of security ive come across ive turned off (not WEP).

 

When i try connecting i just get "local name already in use" or something along those lines. grrrr.....

where is the share located , has it got relevant share and ntfs permissions for the user account that you are logged in as when trying to access it and also how are you trying to access the share ?

mapped drives in this example....but any of my shared drives.

 

For example, i've got the router plugged in infront of me. This pc is wired to it using my account and im having a problem accessing the server. I cant map, i cant do it through Run, cant do it through explorer...

 

The HLTA at the desk next to me has left her laptop out. When she is connected wirelessly to our usual AP in the room its fine....as soon as i switch her over to this router i have no access to mapped drives or shared!!

 

Defo gotta be a router problem...

Is it doing its own DHCP or are you allowing the server to do that?

 

Compare ipconfig /all between one connected to this new device, and one connected to a working one.

right, i've compared and its basically giving itself local addresses.....so currently trying to manually add addresses to see if that works...

If static addresses dont work, try disabling the encryption just to see if it works. I had a problem with WEP keys and shared folders ages ago. I fixed it by using a WPA key

Hang on, by local do you mean a 169.x from windows itself, or local as in a 192.168.x.x IP from the wireless device, you say router, if it's truly a router do you want it to be doing that or do you want a simple AP function (where DHCP is relayed upstream to your server) rather than routing?

I want it to work as a bog standard AP and when i said local ip i dont mean apipa i meant 192.168.*.*.

 

I tried it without any sort of security and it still didnt help...hmph...

I'm sure i read something similar elsewhere about that model (something about bridging not working as standard) - try a firmware update

I reinstalled the firmware as the most up to date version was already on there. still no difference though.....gonna throw the thing out the window soon. ive havent changed one setting on it this time.....still nothing, its annoying because it did work. It's not a new AP!

is this a router u have setup as a wifi AP or is it an actual wifi AP?

Hi

 

I know this will sound daft but is windows controlling the wifi or is the wifi card manufacturers program doing it. I have had situations where if a person has a profile they can log onto the computer using the profile but does not get mapped drives because the wifi does not start to work till they have logged on. To use the computer as a network computer the wifi has to start before a user logs on early on so that it picks up computer settings and then user settings.

 

Just am idea.
