Windows So Slow

Hi All

 

I have a home computer which i reformated about 2 months ago and it is so slow on the log on. When i turn the computer on it comes up with the log on screen i have two users. When i click on the user it takes so long to get the desktop and to become active. It has no start-up programs and not much on the hard disk. Why is this happening please help

have you got any Av on there? Whenever a stand alone computer starts going unusually slow, I'd usually start by thinking virus/spyware.

Has it always been slow? Was it slow when you first remormatted it? Could you have large files on the desktop?

 

And as above, if it's a new problem check for Virus/spyware.

Sounds like your profile might be playing up. I sometimes delete the ntuser.dat file from documents and settings to sort it out.

I'd give it a chkdsk first :-)

 

Is it as slow for both users? Could be scanning (as already said), could be the hard drive is near its end or it could be that the profile is dodgy... could also be that a service is running (not an app in the start up folder) which is failing a few times then stopping

I have to agree with the other replies; check the other user account, check for malware, check the HDD. I assume it's a genuine OS installation too and not something you got from a torrent site? Will it boot into safe mode?

What spec is the pc and do you have all of the proper drivers installed in addition to the advice above.

B*gger me my home computer started doing this on Saturday!

 

First things first I ran a full scan using my Panda AV 2010 installation and it found a trojan (I had downloaded an mp3 file on Friday and it must have been attached to that) which was then removed. Rebooted and the computer just sat on the "Starting Windows" screen for almost four minutes before loading the desktop. The hard disk was buzzing away doing "something" and within a few minutes Panda AV shut itself down and asked for a reboot.

I ran the MalwareBytes Anti-Malware scan utility which found the same trojan again, again it was removed and the computer rebooted but every time the computer started Panda AV would shut itself down.

 

Tried opening the event viewer and got an Error 126 message "unable to start the event log service" I opened services.msc and found several dependency services were not running and could not be started so I Googled it.....

 

Go to your Windows System32 folder and look for eventlog.dll

 

It's GONE!

 

Copy it from your XP Installation disk or download it, copy it back into the System32 folder then reboot.

 

Hey presto! Everything is working normally again
