Subnet - just a quickie

Its been years and many many beers since I did my CCNA (well out of date now) but

 

I need to chnage my IP addess from a 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.252.0 as we are quite tight now.

 

Now if my site range originally is 192.168.200.1 to 192.168.201.254 my new one will end at 192.168.203.254.... but if I miss any that are static and still on the 254 range they will not see and IP's starting 192.168.202 onwards....

 

Just getting my head round it as its one of my holiday jobs and if I can get away with not visited everywhere and turning on the printers to change the subnet till after half term I will be happy.

Hmm. I never did CCNA.. Your original range seems to span two subnets:

 

Original SNM: 255.255.255.0 (are you sure?)

Range: 192.168.200.1 to 192.168.201.254

 

There must be some kind of routing between the two. This may actually change the answer to your question.

 

If the printer remains on SNM 255.255.255.0, then it will think that any IP that not in it's own IP range (which could be either 192.168.200.x or 192.268.201.x) is on another subnet and send the packet to the router.

 

To be honest this is getting a bit too complicated for me at the moment..... Are you sure that the original SNM wasn't 255.255.254.0 (making one subnet across the whole of the orgonal range)?

I think what you really need to think about is keeping that 254 client network and

 

192.168.200.0 255.255.255.0 = 254 Hosts, 1 Network address, 1 Broadcast

 

As the previous poster mentioned, you range between 200.1 -> 201.254 with a 255.255.255.0 SNM is actually two subnets.

 

What is your DHCP server dishing out ?

 

Next question how much static PC's/Equipment do you have ?

 

What are you trying to achieve ? Is it just a larger address pool ?

 

Can you move the static equipment to fixed leases on the DHCP server instead ?

 

Bear in mind you are making the broadcast domain a lot bigger by changing to a 255.255.252.0 network.

 

Depending on your switching equipment it might be worth using vlans and keeping your subnets fairly small and routing them.

Sorry it was meant to be 192.168.200.0/23 and I am changing to 192.168.200.0/22

 

I am intending having the 192.168.200.1 to 254 as static and the other 800 or so as DHCP when I move to /22
