Security Marking

I know this has been discussed before but....

 

We had a number of computers stolen at the weekend, G4 powermacs and cinema displays from a first floor classroom. They were suppossed to be bolted to the floor in a steel cage but it seems they were only screwed into the floor with 1 inch screws. just got kicked out and dropped out of the window.

 

SLT think we should now security mark everything to act as a deterant. I personally dont think this is a deterannt, may help police with identification providing the machine inst stripped down for parts.

 

Weve looked at a number of solutions as we now have about 500 PCs/macs to security mark.

 

We were intrested in Security Mark but seem quite expensive, we were thinking we could find some kind of security paint available on the market Which cannot be removed from both Metal cases and plastic covers on monitors?

 

any ideas welcome?

 

Most important part of the brief is to be visable. UV markers out of the window.

I think just about anything that you apply to the surface of an item is going to be removable i.e paint or the marking compounds yuo can get.

 

Even metling details into plastic casing can be sanded down.

We use Seclectamark

I use smartwater which is UV based then get smartwater protected by forensic science stickers on everything for the visible factor. With a few large stickers on windows and doors to.

just placed and order with selectamark using there Supermark system so theres a vinyl sticker which crumbles if u try and remove it, plus the chemical etching as we didnt think the etching was particularly visible on its own.

That would be the chemical etching that can be removed using brasso would it?

 

We use selctamark and then put the high vis stickers everywhere.

 

The marking stickers are tamper evident as well they just break up.

anyone tried writing down the serial numbers/mac addresses, or is that too old fashioned.

I have a log of all of those as well so when the insurers ask.

We use smartwater and I have a log of all serial numbers for all machines and monitors etc. Thats the first job I do when unboxing new machines.
