Jobos Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Just done my first Office 2007 install and when I open Outlook it's asking to install Windows Desktop Search. I seem to remember reading that this search program hogs the cpu. Is it a worth installing?

srochford Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Used to be true that Windows search was rubbish; not true any longer - it works well and is pretty much essential if you have much Outlook email. the only thing which I'd say against it is that it doesn't want to index network drives - this could be a show stopper if all your work is on a network drive! 1

The initial indexing is quite intensive but you can always pause it. If your users are unlikely to bother with it then there might not be much point but otherwise I've had no trouble with it. 1

I have not used it in a while as the last version slowed my machine down, but sounds like it has improved according to t_h and srochford.

Also WDS is the backbone of W7/Vista search and using r2 etc you can create a index on your fileserver that will handle remote queries in a simple way (or thats the theory)

Defo friday as I thought that was windows deployment services which replaces RIS unless WDS stands for something else that I either forgotten about or dont know what it stands for.
