vle integration with school website

we are looking at vle integration with the website

we have out school intranet which is now moss 2007 , we also have moodle vle and then the website

the plan for a new website has thrown up the question

is it not a good idea to bring all these bits together under one roof or at the very least standardise the look and feel of them all.

Just wondering what you all thought about this

Because you have MOSS 2007 as your platform, you best bet would be to use that for your school website.

 

This can be easily achived through annoymous access and would also make it much easier for staff to update the school website too! and it will give Admin Staff to oppertunity to also update it with school documents etc as they will know how to use sharepoint because of the intranet.

MOSS is the intranet and then Moodle is the VLE. With an intranet being an internal site i dont think using MOSS as the website it the best way to go

 

Anyway you could use this: Moodle.org: Modules and plugins - but its pretty basic, i would stick with your current setup

Every other school that does this also has sharepoint as there intranet, having it as your website does not make in insecure in anyway. you have a front end site which would be set to annoymous access so anyone can view the website on the web, but then as soon as you hit the internal sites you get prompted to authenticate.

 

There is nothing wrong with doing it this way, infact it's a very good way due to the fact from a staff point of view the website would be just as easy to use as there intranet and they (if they were allowed) could update and add content to the website just as easy as adding it to the intranet.

I mentioned in-secure as i thought thats what you were getting at with it being intranet/extranet so to speak..

We're in a similar position with our website being Joomla, portal being Sharepoint and Moodle for our VLE currently we are looking at integrating Moodle and Sharepoint together using Codeplex's project. I don't want to integrate our website as that's mostly for visitors and is designed as such sharepoint and moodle however are for the school's community so this will look better if you can at least get a Moodle theme that makes it look a little more "sharepointy" I've had quotes around the £700 - £1000 mark for this (I could do it in house but when would we have the time)

I'm going down the same route... can't see the point of having a custom designed website, spending money to add live content etc when there's a VLE providing those exact features sitting there as well! Once our Moodle site goes live I'm hoping to replace the website with it so there's just one portal for everyone, much easier imo

Myself i find it harder to work with sharepoint. Creating themes and stuff will be a pain for myself. I also believe on keeping the intranet internal incase someone cockups the permssions or something goes wrong. This way the public cant see private files.
