Server reboots everyday, similar time?

Our PDC (server 2000) has decided to start rebooting daily between 9 and 9:30. There are no logs in event viewer only one saying reboot was unexpected?

 

Really frustrting and not a good time for it. It is an old(ish) Dell Poweredge.

 

Any help much appreciated

Does it just power off then reboot or does it shutdown and reboot?

 

Powering off suggests

 

 

Hardware

Memory, Video, HDD or power problem. etc

 

Reseat memory & video, check for dust, scan HDD check UPS.

 

Shuttingdown

 

Software

Suggests application or service problem. etc.

 

Check services/applications to see if anything runs at that time or is used heavily at that time.

maybe turn off "Automatically Restart" in Startup and Recovery............see if its a BSOD..........dodgy RAM Stick?

Is it is just powering off does it blue screen before it reboots? You need to go in to “System Properties”, “Startup and Recovery” and untick the option to automatically restart. You could wait then and watch to see if there is a blue screen with some information you can use to diagnose the problem.

 

Depending on the configuration of you server you should be getting some dump files you can use to determine what is causing the error (minidump folder).

 

Usually however the stop error (blue screen) would be in the system log - but it’s worth a go.

 

Also you may want to go into your servers bios and look for a log section – if it is a decent enough bios it will have any issues relating to hardware / heat issues. May give you a clue.

Do you have the thermal cut-out set in the BIOS as this could lead to the server rebooting or shutting down.

This could be because of the load at that particular time and the CPUs getting too hot.

Check scheduled tasks and see if any app is set to run between those times that could be causing it to fall over?
