Cannot access server shares via IP or UNC path

Hi guys,

 

I cannot access a server share from a xp pro machine which is on the domain. Via UNC path or IP.

 

However i can ping the server and remote desktop to it.

 

Any ideas?

What is the error message it is showing?

Can the client ping and connect to other machines and servers?

 

Can the server ping the client?

 

Can other machines ping and contact the server and the shares?

 

Is the time and date and region correct on the client and the server?

Sounds like a permissions problem to me?

The error message is "The network path was not found" on the client. If i go to the server i can see the share.

 

The client can ping the server sucessfully. But none of the clients can see the share anymore but they can all ping the server.

 

The clients are able to connect to shares on other servers on a different domain. We have two domains.

Hmmm, I wonder if there's a problem with the trust between the two domains? If the trust is broken you probably won't be able to see a lot like you describe.

The trust between the two domains has been recreated and is bidirectional to work both ways.

Yes they are both on the same subnet.

are you putting a trailing slash after the path as ive found sometimes if you do it will reject the command (so \\server\share$\ fails but \\server\share$ works) no idea why and on odd occasions just going to \\server first will then let it work. could also be windows firewall being odd

computer browser service a restart, netbios tcp/ip helper service a restart and as above you can either disable any software firwalls inc windows firewall or at least allow the relevant ports through the firewall and also enable file and printer sharing , as a last resort maybe enable netbios over tcp/ip on the xp machine ?

 

Am assuming both the share permissions and NTFS permissions are set correctly - can you clarify how these are setup

One idea.

 

Remove from the domain into WORKGROUP

Restart

Add again to domain

Restart

Logon as administrator

 

(I know ive over simplified that ) Could have just said remove and rejoin domain i know
