Just got a UPS (APC Smart-UPS 1400)

 

Light indication saying......."ups regulating high ac power"

 

Anyone know what that means? (sorry)

That the power coming in to the unit from the mains supply is above the "normal" threshold. I'd guess above 245 or something?

If it is just a blip and goes back down to normal within a few minutes I wouldn't worry too much (of course if it's in an area with non-regulated equipment I might worry more!), but if it becomes regular I'd be ringing your local electric provider.

No beeping, got happy green lights and just this orange one (ups regulating high ac power)

APC UPS's always do this as the threshold is too low. Connect to the UPS via serail or USB with the APC software and you can change the upper voltage threshold.

The light has now gone btw - all good.

 

Just a another question............is it safe to plug the UPS into a Power Extension Lead?

I wouldn't advise it myself, I always put the UPS's straight into sockets off the mains, but at that size UPS it won't be too bigger draw on charge than say a 3000VA unit

If the light continues to come and go you can adjust the sensitivity with powerchute. I usually keep ours on 256v iirc.

My UPS's are wired directly in to fused spurs after one or two incidents of them being un-plugged. Infact we had a brand new sub main put up to the server room just for the server rack after we had so many issues around power up there it became silly.

 

I would definitely advise against an extension lead, that's just one more link in the chain to fail. I have had servers running from extension leads before, but it wasn't the best solution and we soon had an additional plug socket put in where it was needed.

 

As for the high AC voltage, we get this from time-to-time and also get it going the other way, low incoming voltage in the evenings sometimes. We have spoken to the electricity company regarding this, and essentially they say because we're in a residential area, the supply will fluctuate with supply and demand on the system. Apparently the tolerances they work between are 210-250 volts - I had no idea it was a wide as that!

Please can you help.

 

I have an apc ups and have had problems with it for a few weeks now. I keep getting a on battery light all the time even though its plugged into the mains. I have tried a different power lead and checked the old power lead and they are ok.

 

Any Ideas.

We get the overvoltage condition when power demand across the school is low (ie during holidays). As has been suggested earlier in the thread, set the voltage threshold higher & reduce sensitivity. I believe both of these steps are recommended on the APC website somewhere.
