GM061061 Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Hi... I have a R reg Peugot 406 and am having a bit of trouble. Since my MOT last week(!), when starting the car i have to rev very high or the rev counter drops to zero and the car cuts out. This also happens when i change gear or stop at a junction/traffic lights....can someone advise
mossj Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 take it back to the mot garage. MOT is only to do with road worthyness, not if the car will brake down or not. Is the garage reputable? they could of knocked something out of whack? I'd open the bonnet and take a look at the carberator and see if anything looks suspect...
freakyleaks Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Sounds like an electrical problem mate, I would take it back get it sorted I have a Peugeot 206 and have had similar problems in the past, when I take mine in for MOT, i take mine to a garage where the fella has 20 years experiance working on peugeot cars, a lot of mechanics starting out are bit like teccys might have not seen how a car has been put together past 01 for example lol! were older cars didn't have any electics in them
deanc Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 given its R reg the chances of it having a carb are virtually none. it sounds like it is struggling to get fuel at low revs so check that there are no fuel leaks anywhere also have a look at the air filter and make sure that it is not clogged up as this will cause issues with running. might be an idea to check the plugs. if you are really unlucky it could be the engine management system, since Catalytic convertors became law they have become nescessary to control the fuel injections system assuming of course that its a petrol car, most garages now have a diagnostic computer that may be able to tell you what it is Dean
michael2k6 Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Lets go back to basics, it's either no fuel, or soft leccy. Check for fuel leaks as advised. I doubt it's that though really. Check things like plugs and leads, does it sound like it's misfiring? Something could of been knocked if they were checking under the bonnet for corrosion, around the subframe mounts for example, arms end up all over the place at some garages. Also, find out if any tuning was done. On MOT, they test Co2 and Hydrocarbon, if these were too high they might of adjusted the mixture (if possible on that car, i dont know) and it might now simply be running too weak.
michael2k6 Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Could also be a lambda sensor or an idle sensor, depending how much engine management there is involved on it.
Chris_in_notts Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 maybe an airleak on the intake manifold somehwere
plexer Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 MOT is only to do with road worthyness, not if the car will brake down or not. Yes I know but he said he'd had the problem since it had an mot last week. Therefore I'd take it back or at least ring the garage that did the MOT and get their opinion. Ben
Mcshammer_dj Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 sounds like a problem with the lamda sensor, which detects the mix levels on idle. A cable may be disconnected
ahuxham Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 Cylinder Misfire? Had the same problem on my P reg. Would simply idle high, than low and cut out till you belted the accelerator. Root cause was found to be resistance on HT Leads, causing engine to misfire. New HT Leads, and new Plugs and bobs-your-uncle, all sorted.
ahuxham Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 There is an emissions test, so perhaps they altered the idling speed/mix to get it to pass? Do things improve when the engine warms up? There is also a MIN/MAX idle test, as well as an emissions test with engine run at Idle and 2K RPM.
INeedAUsername Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 My Clio had the same problem - turned out to be the ignition/idle sensor cables were being rubbed and causing your symptoms. A cable tie fixed it
