ie7 not playing swf files (any ideas)

Small issue with IE7 opening swf files

 

I have Flash and shockwave installed (which i believe are browser plugins)

 

All flash shockwave enabled websites work perfectly.

 

some of our teachers have .swf file resources that when they double click them the system asks what they want to open the file in (no association).

 

Fixed this by using an old verson of the player and reassociated to that exe in the program files folder. this works for now but i would like them to open in ie7 by default

 

My problem lies with IE7 if i use the open with internet explorer they will not load all i get is a white screen with a triangle in the bottom left hand corner.

 

 

Has anyone come across this or fixed this problem.

 

 

IE7 has been so bad for us here no end of problems.

 

OS is Win xp pro with sp 3

latest flash and Shockwave plugins

We had problems with this - mainly on our TS - last year

Something to do with the way Flash/Shockwave was being installed

It required admin rights to install, but then only runs if you have admin rights

IIRC, there was a Reg Hack to solve it - but afraid i cant remember where I found it

i know wht you mean you spend hours looking for a fix and you know you should file these things in a safe place but we are just so relieved to fix the issue.

Anyway - think this is how i resolved it last time.. Problems running Flash Player 8.0.24.0 ActiveX control after installation when logged in as Restricted User on Windows

Odd question, did you guys who had a problem deploy the MSI package via group policy? I had the same problem when deploying flash by group policy. It would install ok but not work in IE. To sort the problem i had to deploy using a startup script.

just looks like it does not have permission to run swf via IE white screen with error sign at the bottom left

 

(changed to allow activ x to run etc in security settings) still no joy.

 

will try the reg fix posted earlier on monday.

New findings

 

if i copy a swf file to the local machine it will run in internet explorer

if i run it from a network share it just gives me a white screen.

 

i cant get my head round this (its something simple) what have i missed

 

Looked at intranet security and nothing jumped out at me or am i looking in the wrong place.

The 'white screen' issue is caused by restrictions imposed by Flash Player's sand-boxing feature (which is a very good thing from a security point of view). These were introduced in Flash Player v8.0. Basically, SWFs can access either local data (i.e. the local file-system) or remote data (Internet/network-based content), but not both at the same time.

 

There are several ways around this however...

 

1) Host the SWF-based resources on an Intranet. For some software packages this is really easy, particularly ones which are just html/swf files.

2) If you only have a few SWFs you could convert them into Flash projector files which embed a copy of the standalone Flash Player with the SWF. If you require more control over how the projector looks and functions you could use SWF Studio ($49).

3) Associate SWFs with the standalone Flash Player. The latest version is always included in the Flash Player Update for Flash CS4 Professional.

4) Add the folder(s) containing the SWFs to the 'local-trusted' sandbox via the Flash Player Settings Manager or a .cfg file located in the 'FlashPlayerTrust' folder.

 

In your case, I reckon options 3 or 4 may be the best/easiest.

i did associate the the files to the standalone player just to get them working and thanks for the links i am going to sit down today and get my head round it all.
