We are currently in the process of implementing a centrally hosted SIMS & FMS system for multiple schools in our authority and i am interested of any suggestions of how others perform backups for SIMS, FMS and DOCSTORAGE data.

we are using 2 servers, one SQL server 2005 that hosts SIMS & FMS SQL database which we are intending to use the SQL maintainence tasks to perform a FULL backup for each DB to a .bak file which then gets backed up using Legato.

the second server is used purely for the DOCSTORAGE server - is it neccesary to stop the service and then perform a backup using the legato client and then restart the service when finished?

what do others use and can anyone recomend a better/different way?

Regards,

Gavin

I use maintenance plans to make full daily backups of the DBs, and get it to use a separate folder for each db. Just make sure you only have one backup system, full is best. If you use differential or incremental another system making backups can interfere when it comes to recovery.

For DocStorage i just copy the folder out if i want a backup else it's just part of a normal tape backup, never needed to stop the service before.
