I'm hoping to start a project exploring the use of web 2.0 tools with Y5 pupils. One aspect of this is likely to be social networking. Please can anyone recommend a tool for setting up a secure community that's OK for 10 year olds?

Do you have a VLE?

The project will take place across quite a number of schools, none of which I know about yet! I'm assuming that some will have access and some may be using VLEs, but I can't guarantee they'll all be using the same one. So I was hoping to find a safe, free, web-based alternative (like ning) that's OK to use with Y5 children. Also, it needs to be very simple to use so that teachers can set it up easily.

For 5 year olds to use safely is not a problem, free is also not a problem, but the last part (see above) could be an impossibility.

 

Why not set up Moodle for all to use, it has IM as part of the build and you can control when they can and can't use it. Also it is free except for the time it takes to set up.
