I'm sure there was a licensing forum on here? Anyway can a moderator move this thread if necessary.

I'm looking for the licenses available for Backup Exec and I'm wondering, if I buy Backup Exec SQL Edition then will this also backup the documents on that server as well as the SQL or do I need the Backup Exec SQL and Backup Exec product. Same for Backup Exec Exchange Edition. Do I need to also buy Backup Exec to go with this?

The website is confusing me by stating that if the server is backing up to its own tape drive then Backup Exec full is also required, otherwise the included remote agent can be used.

Surely it isn't going to cost £1000 in licenses to backup a single server?

Backup Exec for Windows servers will backup the files on the local server to tape. To backup SQL you will need the SQL agent, this also includes a Backup Exec for Windows server agent license (but not a *media* server license).

To backup a single machine with SQL to it's own tape drive you will need Backup Exec for Windows servers and a SQL agent license.

To backup a remote machine with SQL you will need Backup Exec for Windows servers for the tape drive machine and a SQL agent for the remote SQL server (which allows it to backup the files on this remote SQL server due to the SQL server license including the Windows agent license).

At least I think thats right :p

Confused much!

So from this list, what would I need to backup:

- General documents server

- SIMS server

- Exchange server

to their own tape drives.

I was thinking:

- Symantec Backup Exec 12.5

- Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Exchange & Remote Agent

- Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 SQL Server & Remote Agent

but should it in fact be:

- Symantec Backup Exec 12.5

- Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 and Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Exchange & Remote Agent

- Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 and Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 SQL Server & Remote Agent

I'd think so yes, check with someone like Ramesys though, they steered me right when I was looking for a single server as the media server and then backing up remote ones with the various agents.
