Well I have just got some day/night cameras from ebay for £34.99 :D I already have a multi capture card, so I am going to set this up at home (school has just spent 15K on a system that is ok but not fantastic supplied by a local outfit) and see what it like.

Any ideas on min spec for the linux box?

Get capture cards that'll do onboard decoding/encoding and you can get away with a P3-600. If you don't then you'll need a at least a decent Athlon/P4.

You'll need loads of ram and diskspace regardless. Computers and video don't mix well.

Looks like I will have to use my spare Athlon box then.

Btw anyone else following this post and thinking about it I found this link talking about the install

Yeh I've just found that too... have you tried it yet it does seem to work I ain't got the hardware yet so I won't know until theat turns up. Also the live CD will do a complete instal it seems.

There are some good user contribs too including a windows interface
