convert xvid (.avi) to windows media 9

Im trying to find a way to convert .avi to windows media 9. Either in linux or windows. mencoder only seems to support wmv2, which I believe is windows media 8.

 

Im trying to make a file that fits these constraints:

 

Windows Media Video 9

Bit rate: Simple profile Max. 1,700 kbps, main profile Max. 5,000 kbps

Frame rate: Max. 30 fps

Resolution: Simple profile Max. 480 × 270, main profile Max.

QVGA (320 × 240)

 

Any suggestions of software please?

Windows Media Encoder

 

Free MS encoder, as long as your system has a directshow codec able to play the divx/xvid in windows media player then you should be able to use this to transcode it to WMV or even ASF if you want.

Im using the "PocketPC" mode, and changing it to Widescreen which gives the 320x240 resolution. I cant seem to find an option for a 480 × 270 resolution.

 

Anyway, the player doesnt seem to like the file its creating, says bad format.

 

Using Media Info program, it shows the following about the outputted file:

Ok, seems i cant just drag and drop a wmv like i can a mp4, i need to use windows media player to transfer it...

 

Going to go back to mencoder and try to make one again, and then use win med play to transfer it, see if that works..

For pretty much any "how do I convert multimedia format X to multimedia format Y" type question, the answer is Super (linked by mac_shinobi above)

 

Super basically gives you a GUI to a range of open source tools but does it well (and acknowledges its use of those tools).

 

Think I've mentioned this before, but when it's running you can use sysinternals procexp to see what's happening - this will give you the command lines it's using to carry out the conversion and you can then just use those directly if you need to do multiple conversions in the future.

I never knew about that but any linkage to the procxp ?

 

Also I avoid WMV like the plague and seeing as im on OS X I use handbrake for my conversion needs

Managed to find the custom option in windows media encoder, which lets me specify the different dimension, which I can then use the resulting wmv to drag+drop through windows media player onto the sony player.

 

Next question, is there a command line or batch method of converting multiple files?
