Head of English Catholics warns about emails/texting

While I have a catholic background [although I am an atheist] I cannot believe what I have just read:

News item: Link

We are all technically able. I do not think that any of us would be willing to see this go unchallenged.

This is what I cannot decide: Is it the slant that the reporter has put on the report, or has the event been accurately reported and is it this that I am finding objectionable? [i.e.: The inference that IT of itself is to blame for the failure of individuals to interact]

As I heard it on the news it sounded like IT was being blamed for the inability of people to interact with others...........that was what it sounded like anyway. Interesting!!

I don't think the article says that at all. The link you're quoting from says "a worry that ... an excessive use ..." - which is very different from saying "IT is to blame for ..."

I think that social networking etc does change the way people communicate - in some cases, that will be a good thing; communication is enhanced but in others it will be poorer than face to face talk. I certainly think someone like the Archbishop of Westminster has a right (perhaps even a duty!) to comment on such things.

I think the anonymity is also an area which could have benefits but can also cause problems. On this site, for example, I'd guess about half the people post anonymously. I don't know if it matters in the grand scheme of things but I personally don't like the fact that I don't even know the names of the people posting.

Interestingly, the Archdiocese of Westminster uses Twitter: Westminster Diocese (RCWestminster) on Twitter

One of the things that is common to Christianity that I find (well, Catholicism more specifically), is that they dislike change. Change means more questioning of the views held by the Catholic Church, which is bad mm'kay.

Personally, I do think some people spend too much time online, but this is not a cause of relationships breaking down, it is a symptom. Society has always been full of people who can't socialise.

I have this problem myself, I find meeting new people difficult, as I'm sure many of you probably do or have experienced. Computers have helped us with this issue, as we can now talk with people in an environment that we control entirely. How is that bad?
