ZeroHour Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Large parts of West Africa are struggling to get back online following damage to an undersea cable. The fault has caused severe problems in Benin, Togo, Niger and Nigeria. The blackout is thought to have been caused by damage to the SAT-3 cable which runs from Portugal and Spain to South Africa, via West Africa. Around 70% of Nigeria's bandwidth was cut, causing severe problems for its banking sector, government and mobile phone networks. "SAT-3 is currently the only fibre optic cable serving West Africa," explained Ladi Okuneye, chief marketing officer of Suburban Telecoms, which provides the majority of Nigeria's bandwidth. "So all West African countries have to use it." Companies were being forced to use alternatives - such as using satellite links - to maintain connections to the rest of the world, he said. powdarrmonkey Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Just demonstrates (again) how fragile our infrastructure really is. Having to pay for a satellite link might cramp some spammers' style though
apoth0r Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 They should have put "please don't touch - important"
plexer Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 transatlantic cables cost millions so there could well be just one. Doesn't mean it's only one fibre though.
Batman Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 They should have put "please don't touch - important" Come on, we all know that rarely stops anyone
powdarrmonkey Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Come on, we all know that rarely stops anyone Rarely? You mean sometimes it works??
Batman Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Yeah, can't remember who suggested it but I've adopted the practice of doing signs that read something along the lines of "Do not touch this computer, keyboard, mouse or anything attached to it. Important maintenance in progress. THIS MEANS YOU!" with a surprising amount of success. And on that bombshell... Actually, more shocking, I've just discovered my son goes to sleep if you play James Brown to him. You have to dance though
tmcd35 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Actually, more shocking, I've just discovered my son goes to sleep if you play James Brown to him. You have to dance though IIIIIIIiiiii feeeelllll gooood. do do do do, and I knew that I would now! So Good, So Good...
Batman Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Actually, Get up offa that thing seems to be the biggest hit... followed by People get up and drive that funky soul. Michael Jackson works well too but Mum's not a big fan. We're trying out AC/DC with mixed results. James Brown definitely has the edge.
Hacksawbob Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 damage to an undersea cable. "please don't touch - important" sharks tend not to pay much attention to those signs though
