mac_shinobi Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Am contemplating setting up an Intel P4 desktop base unit with a SATA RAID Card and 4 or so SATA Hard drives ( obviously ) but wanted to know which would be better and are there any other offerings Open filer , Free NAS or anything else ? In comparison which one would be better ? Want to use it for windows and mac if possible ( If not then I want HFS+ for OS X )
Michael Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 If you're running hardware RAID you can use any OS you like really. Depends what the unit is going to host I suppose.

mac_shinobi Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 As long as the OS has drivers. Was hoping to have a NAS and point our itunes libraries to the NAS and have our local profiles on an eSATA drive that way its only applications that are stored on the OS drive For the time being was just contemplating about it so still need to figure out how I will do it

synaesthesia Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Have had good experience with the built in software raid capabilities of Freenas - the box is still running after about 3 years of servitutde It just works.
mac_shinobi Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 Have had good experience with the built in software raid capabilities of Freenas - the box is still running after about 3 years of servitutde It just works. so you have onboard raid or how are you connecting the hard drives unless you just attached 4 IDE / SATA drives ?
synaesthesia Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 No onboard, that's using 4 IDE drives all on separate channels (2 onboard, 2 on a PCI card" There is, I believe, sata raid on the motherboard but at the time I had a plethora of IDE kit and nothing SATA - thats all in the main box :| I'd have a rummage under the desk to have a look but can barely move with swinepigmanflu

synaesthesia Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 if memory serves its a P4 3ghz, half a gig of DDR and an MSI mainboard of some description. NOt actually used for anything other than storage of my backups atm :|

NOt actually used for anything other than storage of my backups atm :| You haven't got any spare motherboards for a P4 socket 478 ? Or does anyone else come to think of it - just the motherboard I have currently ( An asus ) the onboard NIC is duff - guess I could disable that and just get some dedicated NIC(s) ? My P4 upstairs is 3ghz with 1gb ram, think its got an 80gb hdd ( obviously need some more hdd's and a raid card unless I use soft raid on free nas or open filer ( if open filer will do the same ) ?
synaesthesia Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I do, but it's an old RM/MSI thingy that I believe only holds up to a p4 2ghz (400mhz FSB) which is undoubtedly no good :|

synaesthesia Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 wasnt sure if it didnt actually make sense or if my brain is malfunctioning so badly the words just don't go right The latter wouldn't surprise me Anyway, I can keep an open eye if you like - there's a lot of kit being Weee'd into oblivion to make way for new stuff within a fair few schools.
