Installing 32 bit apps on 64 bit server

I have an issue with installing 32 bit apps onto a new 2008 standard + SP2 server. Basically no 32 bit app will load, I sinply get the error message about needing a 64 bit version.

 

Now, WOW64 is supposed to be installed and activated as standard in a Server 2008 install, isn't it? I can find no references to installing it other than onto Server Core versions. It's a brand new machine and I installed Server 2008 Standard + SP2 onto it on Friday. Standard installation, not server core.

 

So, I'm stuck. How can I get a 32 bit app to install? Has anyone else come across this issue? Has anyone resolved it?

You will need to find the x64 installer.

 

Some x86 installers will work fine on x64 platform but not all.

The apps I'm talking about are SQL 2005 32 bit and SIMS. Neither will load at all.

 

Where would I find the x64 installer?

I might be wrong, but you would need to use the x64 version of SQL i believe. SIMS running the SIMSINST.exe should work fine

Capita told us we have to use 32 bit SQL 2005.

 

simsinst simply errors out - 'wrong version, 64 bit version needed' or words to that effect, as does SQL.

Oh yeah!! that is correct you have to use the x32 bit installation of SQL if its for SIMS (i'm doing the same bloody thing!/need more caffiene lol) havent started on the SIMSServer yet though.. guess i'll find out shortly.

Because Capita have told us to use the 32 bit version. They say they're not supporting 64 bit SQL until support for SQL 2008 is released later this year.

In any event, the question I need answering is this: Why won't a 32 bit app install onto Server 2008? The OS Loader is supposed to recognise that it's a 32 bit app and launches the appropriate subsystem (WOW64). It's not doing this, any 32 bit app I try to install fails with a message that a 64 bit version is required.

 

I can find no reference anywhere to WOW64 needing to be explicitly enabled, or if it does the how to enable it. I can only find references to this for the core install where WOW64 is optional.

 

Why is this happening? How do I resolve it?

Trouble is it doesn't seem to be enabled!

I know it's a bit late, but to be honest I would forget about installing Sims on a 64bit platform until Capita support it fully, consistently across all their applications. They are unfortunately being very slow off the mark as Sims would work much better on a 64bit platform due to the high availability of memory.
