thinking its about time I get a contract phone. Since internet access is quite important to me I've been looking at various providers and it's not remotely clear how they charge for internet.

most of them are like maximum charge ~ £1+ a day.

is that like a specific amount of data?

All I know is that the Orange plan I'm on is 'unlimited', which works out to be about 500MB a month.

Not really unlimited but more than I've managed to use so far.

Not usually, though they get unhappy if you take them literally. My favourite at the moment is O2's Simplicity SIMs - one-month rolling contract and free bolt-on that can include unlimited web.

I've just received a message today regarding orange data.

The future charge is going to be a maximum of 57p per day + vat (unlimited, fair use of 25MB), or there is a bundle for £7 or so which provides 250MB of data a month.

So, my main gripe with Orange now seems to have disappeared for me :)

I'm with 3, they do 'unlimited internet' (1 gig a month?), 4000 texts and 75 mins for £15, or 200 mins for £20 - just a shame they only do a very limited selection of phones with this tarrif - and I went for the wrong one! Really not getting on the with INQ1, just too slow and the screen if far too small as well, so think I'm going to endup getting an unlocked Nokia 6800...

Virgin do 30p per day for "unlimited" access - details Virgin Mobile (fair use is 25Mb per day)

They do a range of deals for minutes/data from about £10 per month on 1 month rolling contracts. Only possible problem is that you don't get a phone included.
