Converting Sky+ recordings to DVD

I know this immediately sounds suspect but the purpose of this request is to see how easy it would be to convert various programmes my other half (A geography teacher) has taped on Sky+ that are relevant to her lessons (eg: the Krakatoa program from months back).

 

I appreciate there's some legalities involved but frankly it's no different from having a DVD recorder and taping them on there.. I've just got to go the long way round at present.

 

I'm guessing the solution is going to involve a TV card on her PC and an appropriate software package to essentially retape the program while it's being replayed on Sky so in that sense it relates somewhat to this topic:

Any info, suggestions appreciated..

 

 

Oh and only other thing is that the PC is upstairs while Sky is plugged in downstairs so any suggestions on ways to get the signal upstairs would be useful too.

The only way to get the content would be to hook up a dvd recorder via scart lead and rerecord it.

 

The stuff on the drive is encrypted.

Sky and their crafty encryption, isn't it along the same lines as macrovision encryption?

This is part of the reason why I'd prefer a Media Center "type" machine instead of Sky+.

Nothing like macrovision.

 

Macrovision is easily defeated.

 

Sky use videoguard a very secure encryption system.

Please be aware that if the material is not braodcasted free-to-air (ie on a terrestrial or freeview channel) then it is not covered under ERA and cannot be put onto DVD and used in schools.

 

If you wish the show Sky+ materials in school Sky have very strict guidelines and you have to have it installed at the school. The initial contract is worked out as if you are a company using Sky to braodcast to the public (eg a pub) and then you have to justify to them that you are an exception on educational grounds (charities do similar).

Duly noted Geoff and I understand the limitations.. In this instance the materials are from BBC or other terrestial channels already and whilst Sky has been the vector it's purely because we haven't invested in a TV card for the PC or run the aerial into the attic yet.

 

I wouldn't dream of putting this site in a position where they were seen to condone or support illegal practice... just not worth the hassle

Probably a silly thought, but the programs aren't available to download from BBC are they? ICBW, but I think they are putting rather a lot of stuff online to download these days.

 

I don't know where these files stand with DRM and licence expiry etc. however.
