Ok, but could you not just snip the RJ-45 connector off one end and wire a new one up that does nothing with these ground wires?

That defeats the object of having the ground wires in the first place. :)

Why? The wires are still earthed at one end.

EDIT - BTW. What is the point of the ground wires. The whole point of twisted pair is that the signal in each pair of wires is subtracted in order to remove noise.

. Plus that gives the 25 year guaruntee and someone else to call if it doesn't work.

Most of the companies that give you a 25 year Guarantee won't be around in the 25 years so that pretty worthless.

I never said anything about basic knowledge in how to install structured cabling I know how to do trunking, pull cables and terminate network cabling. But as I don't have a recognised industry certification or the relevant fluke or other make tester to test and certify my work I don't do it I pay the proffesionals

Suppose it depends on the person here we like to go the extra mile and reinvest the money saved back into IT for the benefit of the kids.

Great thread though.

To prevent crosstalk.

Only with Cat6.

I believe the guaruntee is with the manafacturer so as long as the stuff has been installed by a suitably qualified person the comeback is with them if the installing company had gone out of business.

I also don't have the time in holidays etc... to be running cables so other jobs that needed to be done wouldn't get done hence why I use professionals.

ok

Plexer is having 3 weeks off so he is really only part time then during the holiday, the reason he does not have time to do cabling as he says is because he is off for 3 weeks not the fact as he claims

thats he is too busy. some of us are lucky to have 1 week off and we get far more done in the summer AND manage to do our own cabling.

Woa Disease. Don't take it out on Plextor just becasue he is taking holiday. Everyone is entitled to holiday, I know I'll be taking mine as well, that make me part time?

I generally like to take my holidays around the winter period...not for any work reason, but because the sun annoys me, I'm a snow person (obviously not here in england...I'm on about proper snow :) ) Nice winter hols..bit of skiing, skidooing and the all important Apres Ski !! :D

Nothing to do with the thread, just thought I would pop in a jovial post !

@Disease: don't get wound up.

Actually I have only 2 weeks to work in the 6 week holiday.

I am on a term time + 4 week contract, 1 week covers training days and the other 3 are spread over the rest of the year. I only have 2 weeks left of my time to work in the holidays between now and november so I once I've done the 2 weeks in the summer that's it.

My technician is only term time + 1 week which covers the training days.

So it's not becasue I am off on my holidays it's the time I have available to me and with the other jobs I have on would not have time for any cabling.

I'm not on term time..just the standard holiday allowance :) Has to be said there is something creepy about a school out of term time. Its got that Shining snowed in hotel feel about it.

Does of course mean that you can speed down the long corridors on wheelie chairs though..so its not all bad :D

It's not a case of that, I just take exception to people who claim they have a massive workload and dont have time to do cabling and other work when the real reason is essentially they are just a Term time only Technician.

@Disease : You are really starting to get on my nerves now. I do have a big workload for the time I have available to me to get it done. Just because you get paid for full time or whatever your contracted hours are.

I have no idea who the hell you are but as a relative newbie to this forum you are hardly endearing yourself.

As I previously said I will not install network cabling because I am not certified to be able to do or to test it to the relevant standards to make sure it operating properly. I don't see that as a waste of money.

Any muppet is capable of punching down a network socket but that doesn't mean it's been done correctly. You can't install electrics unless suitably qualified and I hold structured cabling in the same regard.

Oh and don't call me a technician again.

Being a term time or full time Technician doesn't really make a difference. I am full time I wouldn't do cabling anymore even if I had nothing else to do for the 6 weeks.

And out if interest how long would it take you and Jake to install 2 250 meter runs of fibre and 16 Cat5e outlets in 16 dirrerent rooms in a 1940s building? and a what cost to you?

I fail to see how being term time only or full time has anything to do with this. Either you have the time or you don't. Either you have the skills or you don't. Or you might have the skills and not the time, or the time and not the skills!

If you are term time only, then it will make life more difficult, as there is less time available for downtime and maintenance.

I could do some cabling, I know how it works, although I no have experience with fibre. I choose not to, I use a local company for all my cabling and I'm pleased with the work they do, its more expensive than me doing it certinly, but everything is fully tested certified and labled with a report for me to file so I know which sections of the network are physically sound.

Do I want to do cabling? No. Do I see it as part of my job? No. Do I have time? No. Should any network manager or technicians be *required* to do cabling? I don't think so, unless specifically employed with this in mind.

I would ask you to be more considerate of others with your opinions in the future.

I have to gree with david here.

I am on a 52week contract, a way we look at it here is, it would take us approx a week+ to cable up a room of 30stations. For £60 a double socket, a professional company will come in and do everything within 1-2day, so that's running the cables, terminating them both ends, installing patch pannels, testing all the connections, cleaning up after. That's far more convenient.

And if you work that out the comparative cost of your time to do it, when you can be sorting higher priority jobs, I'm afraid that wins out.

@everyone ...

Calm down ... it's only a discussion (And that is my best Michael Winner impression too!)

It's hot, students are playing up, staff are coming up with lots of things for us to do (even though we have already planned the summer workload).

Let's not fall out with one another.

I would think it would take me quite a while, although we dont have any 1940s buildings, but even in more modern buildings, it would still take a while. I cant give a precise amount of time obviously, because it very much depends on the relative layouts of the rooms, but if I had to guess based on a similar kind of work from last summer, I would say maybe 3 full days (most likely not in 3 days, more 3 days worth of time spread over a longer period , ie. 5 or 6 days)

Like Plexer, I dont consider myself a network technician...I consider myself more an network engineer. I think thats probably a more suitable wording for what I do.

I should also state that I am not knocking anyone for what they do, or the choices they make, or how they do anything. As I have said in several posts in different threads now, I am always merely happy to see what a wide variety of different things we do within the encompassment (is that even a word?) of our job titles. Its a fascinating industry, and the widescape of our roles within the industry is fascinating to me.

I would hope that nobody finds me aggravating or my posts condescending , derogatory or elitist. However if I am coming across that way then I will of course formally apologise and withdraw from causing further negativity

This is a forum is it not for people who work in education, yet you want me to censor my replies so as to not hurt peoples feelings when I disagree with what people say.

I have no idea who the hell you are but as a relative newbie to this forum you are hardly endearing yourself.

I am not here to endear myself, I am here to offer advice , seek it and offer opinions. And newbie? you have only been a member of this forum for 18 days more than me. Surely you don't stoop as low as calling a someone a forum newbie or value their opinions based upon how long they have been a forum member, I didn't realise I had wandered onto a counterstrike forum LOl R0ffl3 1111!!elevntee1

My views are exactly that an opinion, if you take exception to that then thats a personal problem and not mine. I can take criticism.

I get paid to do everything in the school, cabling AV installs projectors the works.

My opinion is if you are able to take 4 weeks off during athe summer you do not have a massive workload, thats my opinion and I stand by it.

I am sorry plexar I won't confuse you with being a technician again.

He's not taking the time off, he's stated that it is the only time he has left on his contracted hours, being term time + 4weeks.

I'm sure if he was given the choice of being full time, he'd consider it purely on having more time to do these sorts of jobs.

As is it, his school probably can't afford full time and that is by no means his fault.

I think we do need to be sensitive to other peoples situations.

You are entitled to your opininion, yes. But other people are also entitled to disagre with your opinion.
