Just loaded sims on to another server as our old server has a hardware fault. Logons were fine until I switched the old server off. Now the logon box takes 75 seconds to appear and then a further 75 seconds once you have put your details in. If I boot the old server back up, logon times are quick, what have I missed out. I have remapped everyones drive to the new server etc!

Just for clarification - with the old server off you can still log in - like after waiting 75 seconds it works? is that correct? if so, it's not connect.ini

The original connect.ini just pointed to sims on a share of the s drive. The new connect.ini is as follows:

ServerName=servername\sims2005

DatabaseName=SIMS

ServerType=SIMSSQL

Yep, we can still log in and everyuthings fine, it just takes this amount of time for the logon box to appear and then a further 75 seconds once you have put you un and password in.

What are the specs of this 'other' server you have used? Could it be that it's not up to the job? Processor, Memory, Network speed....

Is it doing any other tasks?

Have to agree, go start, run, sims.ini check the setups path, it's prob looking at the old server, so each time you run SIMS it's checking for updates on the old server. I think I've got a script somewhere, let me know if you want it.

Have you checked your AV and have you set up the sims.load on the SIMs server to be excluded from virus scan.

Sometimes excluding some of the other files in there can speed up the login box.

It should take no longer than 5 secs according to the technical manual on the Capita website.

Can I just tag on the end of this question?

 

We are getting a new server installed over the summer to host SIMS and we are also going to Lesson Monitor in september.

 

So working on that basis, I've been setting up the workstations ready for this and now realise I'm probably going to end up with the same problem. Is there any reason why I couldn't go and change the SIMS.ini file to point to s:\sims\setups rather then servername\simsfolder\sims\setups? (or could someone point me in a direction of a logon script I could use to update this rather then going round each workstation again come september?)

No. Should work, will cause problems if you don't have the s drive mapped. Generally it's bad practice.

 

Way I do it is have a CNAME in my dns. That way you can just change 1 dns record.

ahhh, that's quite a good way to do it!

 

After this move might start making those changes (because I'm hoping not to have to replace the server again for another few years now!)
