just a quickie

 

If I reconfigure squid/nix to be a transparent proxy, will the people already connecting to the specific proxy address still work?

Yes, but there's one cavat. You can't use authentication with a transparent proxy.

I think you can, just not easily - I think it's now a feature of SmoothWall.

Well unless tom is going to enlighten us, I don't see how.

 

The proxy server could have (from DHCP?) a list of machines and their assigned IP addresses, and know (from Active Directory?) which user was currently logged on to each machine, then it could tell what each user was doing.
