Username added to print

Hi All

 

Does anyone know of any software that will force the students domain username to be printed on any document sent to print. I can't seem to find anything on the web, and I suspect it would severely cut printing costs if this was to occur.

Hmm the one way I know if is to use cover sheets on the print queue but that effectively wastes a page of paper each time.

One way to do it is to change the default document templates so that it is added as a header/footer.

 

Alternatively, use a print server that can re-process the spooled documents, adding it in. CUPS can do this but I haven't figured it out yet.

Annoying thing is you could do this in mac os 9! Was great untill we upgraded to os x. And would love to find a solution for good old windows!

The header footer idea is good for office products, but not if they print out say, pictures from another program. I've not heard of CUPS, will this work with Windows (We're running a Server 2003/XP network).

CUPS is linux based but does work for windows machines (virtualise it!)

 

You can set up a default footer for ALL office products via a script, I cant remember where I saw it, I will look it up for you.

I'll look forward to receiving the script link & give CUPS a serious dose of looking at. Two questions, what distro flavour would you recommend running CUPS on & do you have links to any decent idiots guide to setting CUPS up?
