[news] Centralised literacy/numeracy to be scrapped

It looks like some of the government's key policies in education are going to change:

 

BBC NEWS | UK | Key schools policy to be ditched

 

From 2011 schools will no longer have to implement national strategies in literacy and numeracy.

 

Instead they will be encouraged to work together to find local solutions to the challenges of improving the basic skills of their pupils.

 

Is this the start of the end of this government's obsession with centralising things which should not be centralised? Or is it just an anomaly?

Maybe they've just given up; why should kids need to read and write in proper English? Ews txt, mch qkr!
