I'm trying to add roles to a new virtual server running Server 2008 R2, if I use the add role wizard progress gets to "Collecting installation results" and just freezes the whole vm. Using snapshots I can revert to a saved state and I've found that by adding roles using powershell works ok. Has anybody else had this problem or knows what could be causing it? I don't have a problem adding the roles a different way but it would be nice to know why it does this.

Im having this same issue with Server 2008 R2 x64 Standard and Enterprise.

Configuration:

2x HP DL380 G6's. Dual Quad Core E5540s, 24GB RAM, iSCSI SAN for vmdk's and 802.3ad GBe network. Running ESX 4.0.

I provisioned another VM on the same host running 2008 Standard (not R2) and im not having this issue. I also read somewhere at one point that because R2 is only 'experimentally supported' its best to set the host profile to 'Windows Server 2008 x64' but this hasnt seemed to help. Once or twice i have successfully gotten past 'Collecting installation results' but its not consistent.

Additionally, just in case, i migrated the VM to DAS which is 2x 146GB 15k SAS disks in RAID 1. Same situation. Really hoping U1 for ESX 4.0 resolves this, but until then i really cant find any more information on it.

Any thoughts and feedback would be good and if i stumble across anything i'll let you know.

I had the same issue and contacted VMware support. This is known issue with the SVGA driver with VMWare tools. Please see VMWare KB 1011709. Uninstall the VMware tools and then do a custom install and do not install the SVGA driver. This should resolve the issue.
