Imaging onto network

@Witch: Ok just for you as I realise you were the topic starter and the one grateful for the help unlike someone else here its is:

 

Ok preparing a station for imaging I actually have a different image for each hardware type.

 

Install windows and configure it how you want them all to be settings, appearance, desktop etc...

 

Install any applications you may want I install mine afterwards with GPO's but some people put them on the image.

 

You need to use setupmgr.exe to create an answer file for the windows mini setup. A small guide to doing this is http://www.networkclue.com/os...stall.aspx <--- there.

 

The you create the sysprep folder on the c: drive and include your answer file and the sysprep files.

 

Run sysprep and choose the mini setup option and the shutdown option.

 

Once sysprep has run the machine will shut down.

 

You know boot it from your network boot disk or whatever you have to run ghost and you choose the options to clone it to an image on your mapped network drive.

 

Once this is done you have a clone of this hardware that you can deploy onto other clients.

 

Now if you reboot the machine you just cloned it will run through mini setup and all you have to do is give it a name and let it finish setup.

Plus I forgot to add like mrfogetful said I keep all my answer files and different version of sysprep and things on a shared folder for techie staff only then I can access all my documents and technical resources from anywhere. You could keep it in a folder on your share that holds your images.

This is a professional forum yes but that was basically a brain dump from what I can remember and thats probably not the whole story I'm not even at work at the moment as I'm taking a few days off to help the antibiotics sort me out as I'm still trying to get rid of my tonsillitis from 3 weeks ago.

 

As I said it's taken me a long time to end up with a solution that I'm happy with and I've imaged hundreds of workstations with it.

cotink - actaully, just checked and you are quite right about 9 and 10 - although I could of swarn that I run v9 in one of my schools and its definatly an enterprise edition that i'm running - must check.

 

V8 though is an enterprise product as V2003 is the home equivilant to that.

Thought as much... my other half has AV8.0 from Symantec so it looks a lot like they've created a common versioning number for the engine underneath...
