We are looking to provide the ability for students to select subjects from a blocking grid online. The process will involve students selecting their preferences first to get the overall numbers, and then a second phase will involve the selection itself. Does anyone have any thoughts, recommendations or issues for consideration?

I'm guessing that the ssonline software isn't free, and there's no mention of price on website.

If someone knows PHP and MySQL, you could knock something up pretty easy for free.

It can be done with a survey, even a google docs form would work. However, that starts to fall down if you want something non-linear, where one subject choice has implications for others.

If it's not possible to do some subjects because they clash with others you could use branching in the survey couldn't you?

The original post seemed to imply two stages. One where the pupils fill in their subject preferences via a nice simple web form, and another where the software arranges the timetable so as many people as possible can do the subjects they wanted. The first part is easy, the second part is hard.
