Couple of quick SQL license questions here.

 

1) Can SQL Express be used in a corporate environment?

 

2) Does a user need to have a SQL CAL in order to use the reporting services through HTML, using a full SQL server backend i.e. not express edition.

Yes, it can be used in a corp environment.

 

Not sure about the CAL deal though. That'd be one for an MS licensing bod to answer I think.

Pretty sure the answer to 2 is a Yes, they do. You will definately need to check this with a licensing expert though.

Microsoft say a cal is required "for each user that accesses a server running SQL Server software"

 

So that'd be a yes.

 

This is of course unless you decide to get a per processor licence

 

Processor License. Under this model, a license is required for each physical or virtual processor that is accessed by an operating system environment running SQL Server software. This license does not require any device or user client access licenses (CALs).
