Adding my VLE to DNS - Help!

OK, I have my moodle server running internally on a private IP address 10.60.*.* and I have registered a domain for it Google. Now I am working out what i need to do so users in and out of the school can access it through the registered domain name.

I know I have to add Google in DNS but not quite sure how!

Would I create a new forward lookup zone called Google or just add a new A record in my existing forward lookup zone!

 

I just don't play around enough with DNS to know this!

Hi there,

 

You need a public IP pointed to your internal IP (10.60.x.x) or if you have an adsl connection or so just port forward port 80/443 (depending upon usage) which you then point your Google to with the vhost set up to accept connections for it.

Sorry i didn't mention that I aready have a public IP registered to point to the private IP set up by my LA comms dept.

So users from outside the school can access the moodle.

It is just people trying to access it from the internal network can't!

I assume you're using AD integrated DNS? If so, just add a DNS zone "prentonmoodle.co.uk" and add an A record for www pointing to your internal IP

Two stages then, first one in my opinion would be to log onto 1&1 and set prentonmoodle.co.uk with an A record pointing to your public IP, and then www.prentonmoodle.co.uk as a CNAME to prentonmoodle.co.uk (or two A records, not really hugely important).

 

That should then mean folks from the outside can use your domain to land on the moodle.

 

Depending upon how the routing is set up does http://yourpublicip work internally or land you somewhere else? You could set up a forward zone for prentonmoodle.co.uk and set again 2x A or 1xA/CNAME up but using the local IP internally.
