Exchange mail push technology

I understand that the latest version of Exchange has the ability to "push" email to mobile devices in a similar manner to blackberry devices. How does this work? Does the mobile device connect to the net via GPRS and download them or does the mobile device connect directly to the Exchange server in some manner?

You can with Exchange 2003 to some extent. All that will happen is an agent on the mobile device will call in occasionally with it's current IP etc then the server can just send the mail to it. Nothing really special.

That wouldnt be push delivery then that would be the devicing pulling it.

It works to an extent with Windows Mobile 2003 IIRC but to get it all working properly you need a Front End Back End setup - hence wtice the cost!

Thats just to collect your mail it's not this push thing which supposedly alerts your device or something similar.

You need Exchange SP2 and the mobile device needs the Messaging & Security Feature Pack for WM5.

 

It's uses a sequence of HTTP connections.

 

1) The device makes a connection telling Exchange which folders it cares about and how long to monitor them.

 

2) If anything changes in those folders Exchange gives the device a list of folders that have changed so it can sync the new content, otherwise Exchange hits the timeout and gives the device an empty list.
