We've bought a Samsung R510 laptop that came with an OEM installation of Vista Home Basic. We figured we'd save some money and buy a laptop with this licence as we have a school agreement to upgrade these to Vista Business. Problem is, we only have Vista upgrade disks and not the full version, so can't boot from these, and it will not boot from an XP disk or give the option for an XP install in the GUI of Windows.

There is no option to upgrade through windows anytime upgrade and putting in the Vista upgrade disk returns the message "Vista SP1 is already installed on this machine"!

Short of zero-filling the hard drive, is there any easier way of doing this?

Goes through all the preparation, then when it is just about to start the installer bit, it reboots and reports the OS is now corrupt and needs repairing.
