Our college has their Open Day this Friday and I have thought about creating a CD of software as a giveaway from the IT Department. The software could either be something that their kids could use for school studies, system utilities and maybe some fun games / activities (obviously it all has to be freeware / open source)

My list so far is:-

Open Office

Kompozer

GIMP

Acrobat Reader

Audacity

Google SketchUp

Photo Story

Game Maker

AVG Free

Lego Designer

What other software would you recommend??

Have a look at what modules are taught in differnt subjects around the school and try to tailor the applications around those.

I would have a look at:

* Wink - Screencasting App

* 7Zip - COmpression Utility

* LBreakout2 - Game

* ConvertAll - Utility (converts numbers from format X to Y (eg:KG to Pounds))

* LightScreen - Screenshoting

try having a look at portableapps and see what you like from there.

You need to make sure you have a distribution license from the producers of each piece of software. OpenOffice.org and the gimp are OK, because the GPL permits unlimited distribution, but for example Acrobat Reader requires a license from Adobe.

If you want a license for Grabber, I'll square it upstairs and send you one.

Blender (and would be nice to include the docs and video tutorials from blender.org - Education & Help)

Sharpdevelop, if they do any .NET work on the programming side of things (as a side note, works fine through WINE too...).

...aren't we getting towards more a DVD rather than a CD? :)

I'd be inclined to use Foxit rather than Adobe. I don't know about any licencing problems but I'd have made this suggestion even without powdarrmonkey's comment.

To get around any licencing issues, what about a nicely designed html page with links to the sites/software with descriptions of what they are and why they should have them?

What about a folder of favorites web sites? Sites like GCSE Bitesize, revision sites, etc?

Thats what I ended up doing. I made a basic html version of our intranet page and set it to pop up in the autorun file. The main page had info about the school and the IT department and then I had a second page that had links to various programs mentioned above.

The head thought it was a safer idea and apparently the feedback from people at the open day has been really positive.

Like Adobe Reader, AVG Free is free-as-in-beer but you don't get the right to redistribute it. For future reference, there's a quick all-in-one solution to this:

OpenDisc | Education
