Hi all,

I have a run of about 50m of FTP cat5e cable. Some of the run (about 20m) shares trunking with 240v electricity cable, this was the reason I chose FTP over UTP, to give some protection against interference.

However, I have since read that it will need to be earthed at one end.

Is this absolutely necessary?

Is FTP overkill, and will UTP do?

How do I go about earthing the cable?

The cable is also running power over ethernet using an injector/splitter arrangement. The cable runs from router>injector>--------->splitter>wireless access point.

Thanks for any help/advice!

If it's 50m it sounds like you're connecting buildings, which you should not be doing. It should be fibre, radio, microwave or some other non-conducting signal between the two. You should also not be alongside mains in the same enclosure, that's how accidents happen.

Use properly crimped, shielded terminators at each end to connect the shielding to the case of your switchgear.
