disk check for ntfs in linux

my laptop is a dual boot xp and linux. This week the windows partition seems to be playing up. I did a chkdsk /R and it took near on 12 hours. Copying files to and from the HD are taking an age. The linux partition is fine. Is there anything I can run in linux to do a scan / check of the NTFS partition?

What about a bart pe disc ?

 

Short of that get the diagnostic utility for your make of hard drive ( from the manufacturers website ) should be an iso image you can burn to cd and boot your computer to check your hard drive.

If it took 12 hours, did Windows actually find any bad clusters or any errors? If you have any critical data on the drive, you need to back-up immediately. It could well be a sign the drive is on its way out.

 

You can also run Chkdsk from the Recovery Console, although it's very similar to XP's normal method on the system drive.

I have no idea if it found anything, it had rebooted back to windows by the time it finished. Its strange, my external hard disk had just stopped working as well. Ill order a new one to backup my stuff. Ill try the manufacturers disk utility once I can figure out what type of disk it is.

I cant boot to windows now at all even in safe mode, although can still boot to the ubuntu partition and access the ntfs one. So im sitting backing up all my data from the ntfs partition, and im trying to find a manufacturers utility for the HD

Cant find a toshiba one anywhere. Will spinrite work? Or will the seagate or another manufacturers utility work?

Apparently toshiba dont do any disk diag tools but spinrite should help

I find that Hitachi DFT is a pretty good hard disk tester.

*DO NOT* use any *nix tools on the windows partition. You will just run the risk of losing more data. The only thing you should try and run is windows Scandisk/CHKDSK.

oh right. Thanks. Ive just burnt a XP CD I will use to boot from to try and fix it. What about Spinrite or the Hitachi thing mentioned above ?

 

Interestingly as an aside I was able to get my external HD working by plugging it in to a Vista laptop. It was actually recognized and assigned a drive letter even though I couldnt browse it. Chkdsk fixed a load of stuff and now it seems to be working. Ordered a new one of them anyway

ChkDsk puts the log results in the application log, too - look for an entry from source Winlogon (?? iirc), that'll be the scan results

does it do it too when chkdsk is run from cd recovery console?

 

I ran the spinrite, did the first 3 checks on the entire drive. It passed perfectly.

 

So Im starting to think its a problem with windows now rather than the drive. Eset is up to date, so I dont think its a virus.

 

Windows used to take about 40 secs to get to the login prompt now its about 3 mins, and to get to the desktop used to take about 20 secs now is about 3 mins. HDD is always accessing - the light is on all the time.

 

Not too sure what this could be?

running diskmon and filemon I found that Zonealarm was making doing a HUGE amount of read / writes to the disk. Shutting down zonealarm has dramatically improved the situation. My HDD light isnt constantly on now. But still, somethings up. Trying to play a standard mp3 results in jerky playback like its struggling. Disk is only 0.5% fragmented. Ive run memtest, RAM is fine. CPU temp is ~ 55C. This is doing my head in and im about 3 days away from just formatting and starting again.

 

 

Also, I still strangely cannot boot into safe mode.

After more monitoring with filemon, it seems a program I use to keep track of internet usage / speed called DUmeter was playing up as well. Uninstalled that and it seems the computer is back on track. 30secs to logon screen, and its working a lot lot better. Not tried to get to safe mode yet, but Im a lot lot happier with the performance. Thanks to all contributors of this thread.
